GREENE COUNTY, Ind. — October 24, 2024

Two people were injured Thursday, Oct. 23, when a fuel tanker rolled over and leaked a substantial amount of fuel near the Greene/Lawrence county line on State Road 54, according to the Eastern Greene Fire Territory.

Emergency responders arrived to find both occupants entrapped in the cab. Bystanders had already used fire extinguishers on the semi before firefighters reached the scene, the department said in a statement posted to its Facebook page.

One occupant was airlifted to a trauma center and the other was transported by ground to a local hospital. Both injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

State Road 54 was closed for several hours to allow rescue operations, spill mitigation and vehicle recovery.

Agencies assisting included the Eastern Greene Fire Territory, Monroe Fire Protection District, Taylor Township Fire Department, Greene County Sheriff’s Department, Greene County Ambulance Service, Ken’s Westside Service and Towing, Air Evac Lifeteam 39 (Brazil, Ind.), Hoosier Spill Response, Indiana State Police — Bloomington District, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC, INDOT and Greene County Emergency Management Agency.

The cause of the crash and the amount of fuel released were not immediately available. Officials expressed appreciation to responding agencies and bystanders who helped contain the incident.
