Gerry Conway, Punisher Co-Creator and Spider-Man Writer, Dies at 73

Gerry Conway, the legendary comic book writer perhaps best known for co-creating The Punisher, has died at 73.

The news was confirmed by Marvel, who posted a tribute to the prolific writer of titles like The Amazing Spider-Man, Tomb of Dracula, and Savage Tales. According to THR, the writer had been battling cancer.

“Gerry Conway brought real stakes to his writing, able to weave together sensational super heroics with the human and relatable, and in doing so created some of the most memorable stories and characters of all time,” said Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. “His writing has been hugely impactful across our comics, but it has also inspired so much of what we’ve done on screen, from Werewolf by Night to Daredevil to Spider-Man and Punisher. Gerry was a wonderful collaborator and friend to so many and will be dearly missed.”

Conway was a lifelong comic book creator, first breaking into the industry in his teens and managing to secure the coveted spot as the writer of The Amazing Spider-Man at the age of only 19. Conway was the first to succeed original writer Stan Lee on the title. His ASM run, which lasted from 1972 to 1975, was notable for featuring the death of Peter Parker’s girlfriend Gwen Stacy in issue #121 and the debut of The Punisher in issue #129.

Conway’s other Marvel co-creations also include Man-Thing, Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers), and the Spider-Man clone Ben Reilly. Conway was also notable for helping to solidify the modern Marvel version of Dracula.

Conway also enjoyed a long career at DC Comics, where he helped revamp the Justice League and co-created characters like Firestorm, Vixen, Jason Todd, and Killer Croc.

In the ’80s and ’90s, Conway shifted more to writing and producing TV, working on shows like Law & Order, Batman: The Animated Series, Matlock, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, and Perry Mason. He still remained a fairly regular presence in the comic book industry, however, with more recent projects including The Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows and Carnage.

Conway also made headlines in 2022 when he publicly made an effort to reclaim the Punisher’s iconic skull emblem for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Conway is survived by his wife, Laura, and two daughters from a previous marriage.
