It was a chilly start to the day with many suburban locations waking up to temperatures in the 30s. Among the colder lows include: 32 degrees at Aurora and 35 degrees at Lisle, Joliet and Lansing. Temperatures at those levels can promote frost. Veteran Weather Observer Frank Wachowski reported light frost at his residence near Midway Airport.

Monday high temperatures 

Following the chilly open, temperatures rebounded nicely Monday afternoon under bright sunshine. Highs peaked at 66-degrees for O’Hare, Midway and the Lakefront, readings 5 degrees above normal and about 7 degrees warmer than Sunday’s chilly upper 50s.

Monday wind gusts 

The milder afternoon readings occurred as a result of gusty southerly winds which helped transport milder air into the region.

Monday U.S. highs and departure from normal

A prod of warmer air ahead of the next approaching Fall cold front brought 70-degree temperatures as close by as St. Louis and Kansas City. Highs were generally 5-10 degrees above normal across a large swath of the Midwest.
