Vehicle stolen during Facebook Marketplace test drive, police uncover possible theft scheme

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC4) — Police have uncovered a possible vehicle theft during a Facebook Marketplace test drive in early October.

Ethan Matthew Copier, 30, of Salt Lake City, was arrested in connection with a vehicle theft scheme.

According to police officers with West Valley City Police Department, Copier sold his vehicle to a tow company, who later sold it to a buyer. The buyer later decided to sell the vehicle on Facebook Marketplace.

Court documents allege Copier saw that his former vehicle was for sale and scheduled a test drive. Copier allegedly drove off with the vehicle, never returning it to the owner.

Police say Copier changed the registered owner’s name to obtain a new title on Sept. 29, 2025, and stole the vehicle just two days later.

Documents show Copier is currently on probation following two misdemeanor charges to which he pleaded guilty on Mar. 31, 2025.

He was arrested Monday and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
