SCOTT, LA. (KLFY) — Fire struck a residential home in the 200 block of Pope Drive earlier today that left two injured and a dog dead, firefighters said.

Upon arrival, crews observed heavy fire coming and confirmed that a person was still inside the home, officials said. Firefighters located the victim near the rear door and pulled him to a safe area in the yard. The rescue crew reentered the structure to perform a secondary search for additional victims, at which point they rescued a dog. Crews made entry into the structure and were able to quickly bring the fire under control.

Later on, firefighters learned that prior to their arrival, a Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Deputy located the victim in the rear hallway and was able to pull the unconscious victim to the doorway. According to firefighters, his actions were instrumental in helping firefighters quickly locate the victim and increased their chances of survival.

The person rescued was airlifted to a local hospital with burns to his torso and severe smoke inhalation, fire officials said. A second occupant, who escaped prior to the arrival of emergency personnel, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. The dog removed from the residence did not survive, fire officials said.

During the investigation, the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental in nature, originating from an improperly discarded cigarette on the porch.

The residence sustained extensive fire damage throughout and has been deemed uninhabitable, firefighters said.
