TOPEKA (KSNT) – A Shawnee County judge has delivered a prison sentence to a man who pleaded guilty to shooting and killing a Topeka man in 2023.

A judge sentenced 27-year-old Daniel R. Gallow Jr. to serve 271 months, or around 22 years, consecutively in prison on Oct. 14. This comes after he pleaded guilty to charges in connection to the shooting death of 55-year-old Troy Shepard in April 2023.

  • Voluntary manslaughter; upon sudden quarrel or heat of passion – 228 months.

Past reporting

Officers with the Topeka Police and other first responders responded around 3:15 p.m. on April 18, 2023 to the 900 block of Southwest 17th Street due to reports of a shooting in the area. Police arriving at the scene found a man, identified as Shepard, suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. He died at a local hospital a few hours later.

Police arrested two people in connection to the shooting investigation, later releasing one suspect. The TPD took Gallow into custody on May 15, 2023 and the Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office filed charges against him a couple days later. Gallow pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and aggravated burglary on Sept. 2, 2025.
