Dick’s House of Sport to bring new store to Sioux Falls

Dick’s Sporting Goods is bringing its new store concept, Dick’s House of Sport, to Sioux Falls.

It will be in the former Sears space at The Empire Mall and is expected to replace the existing Dick’s Sporting Goods location.

While a representative for Dick’s Sporting Goods confirmed the new location, no additional details were available.

Dick’s House of Sport started in 2021 and generally is a larger-format store designed to be more experiential than a traditional Dick’s Sporting Goods store.

When the company announced the new concept several years ago, it said the intention was to “explore the future of retail through multisport experiences inside and outside the store, broad integration with the community, elevated customer service that will rely on passionate and skilled employees and enhanced technology for ease of connection with the brand.”

Many stories feature an outdoor turf field, rock-climbing wall, batting cage and golf simulators.

Designated areas within the store focus on various sports as well as athletic and outdoor apparel brands and footwear.

A new addition called the House of Cleats focuses on soccer gear.

Stores in other markets host birthday parties, group outings and community events.

In addition to retail sales, House of Sport locations have a strong servicing component and offer interactive elements.

Services include golf club fitting, tuning and regripping; bicycle tuning and repair; and baseball and softball glove steaming and custom shaping.

A city building permit recently was issued for demolition of the exterior facade and interior of the former Sears, as well as structural modifications for the future House of Sport.

Sears closed at The Empire Mall in 2018. The space has been used temporarily by other retailers, and redevelopment concepts had included everything from health care uses to office space.

No building plans have been filed related to the existing Dick’s Sporting Goods space.

The national retailer opened at The Empire Mall in 2013.

“We’re excited to welcome Dick’s House of Sport to The Empire Mall and the Sioux Falls community,” mall manager Dan Gies said.

“The addition is the type of forward-thinking addition that keeps our property fresh and provides shoppers with an ever-changing experience.”
