Man gets over 10 years for attempted murder in New Hope stabbing

A man was sentenced to nearly 11 years (130.5 months) in prison on Monday in connection with a stabbing in New Hope in July 2023.

Chong Vang, 23, pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree murder in August.

Vang and Kristy Marie Hanson were both initially charged with attempted first-degree murder. Hanson pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting first-degree assault and was sentenced to six years.

Police responded to a fight between two men at a New Hope park on July 26, 2023. One of the men attacked the other with an edged weapon and then ran away.

Court documents state the victim had 10 cuts and puncture wounds.

Surveillance video showed Vang following the victim in the park, appearing to make small talk with him, hugging him and then stabbing him.

Vang later told police he’d been dating Hanson for around 10 months and, during that time, Hanson told him she’d been sexually assaulted by at least five men, court documents state. Vang got their names from her and said he would kill them if he ever found them.

He admitted to trying to kill the victim because he believed the victim was intentionally following Hanson.

Hanson added that she picked Vang up after he allegedly stabbed the victim, according to the complaint. She then helped clean the blood off Vang and bought him new clothes before returning home.

In Hanson’s journal, police found an entry that said, “On Wed July 26 (sic) Justice was served.”
