Rockford’s historic Chick House to become luxury apartments

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Work has begun to transform the historic Chick House in downtown Rockford into new housing.

City leaders hosted a project kickoff for the Chick House Flats, at 119 S Main Street, which will convert the former hotel into 18 luxury apartments with space for three businesses.

“We have lots of demand. On top of that, we care about our community. This is where we live, this is where our families are,” said Justin Fern of Urban Equity Properties.

The Chick House is located at the corner of South Main and Elm Streets and has been vacant for decades.

Urban Equity Properties purchased the lot earlier this year, with plans to revitalize the area.

The renovation is expected to cost $12 million and be completed in 2027.
