Motorcyclist dead, lane closures in effect, after crash on Bangerter Highway

This is a developing story. ABC4 will update this post as more information becomes available.

BLUFFDALE, Utah (ABC4) — Several lanes were closed on Bangerter Highway near 2700 West in Bluffdale and one is dead due to a fatal crash.

According to Utah Highway Patrol, around 7:00 p.m. this evening, a 17-year-old male motorcyclist struck a crash barricade on Bangerter Highway near the 2700 west on-ramp in the gore area, which is the area that separates the main traffic area from the on-ramp.

Lieutenant Allen, with the Utah Highway Patrol, said that the 17-year-old was trying to make an illegal pass, and cut across early, according to witnesses. Officials confirmed that the motorcyclist was pronounced deceased on scene, though they have not disclosed his identity, since he was a juvenile.

According to Lieutenant Allen, all eastbound lanes were closed. Bangerter Highway was closed for several hours due to the crash and as a team investigates it. They are also speaking with another motorcycle rider who was riding with the deceased motorcyclist to determine why he cut across.

The second rider reportedly experienced minor scrapes and bruises.

As part of the investigation, Lt. Allen says that they would be flying a drone and were talking with nearby construction crews to ensure that all barrels and highway dividers were properly marked. He also emphasized the importance of helmet safety and vigilance on the road, especially for motorcyclists.

He said, “Motorcyclists are harder to see, so they have to be more patient and make sure other motorists see them. Everyone has to have that due diligence, especially motorcycles, this time of evening, sun’s going down. Safety, in general, is important.”

At this time, law enforcement have not confirmed any other details about the crash. However, anyone in the area should expect delays and take alternate routes if possible.
