Fort Campbell High School resumes sports despite ongoing government shutdown

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (WKRN) — The ongoing government shutdown has come with plenty of unintended consequences, and Fort Campbell High School had to pay the price by pausing its football season.

At Fort Campbell, the high school football team was forced to cancel its games and practices. However, they’ve since been able to reschedule them.

Sports were paused for several days at Fort Campbell due to the government shutdown. Sports, like football and girls’ volleyball, suffered the consequences as games were postponed or set to be cancelled.

LATEST KENTUCKY NEWS:

According to WKRN’s partners at Clarksville Now, the Campbell Falcons football team was not allowed to practice or continue with games until the shutdown was lifted. Last week, the school announced it would have to forfeit its scheduled regional game, which was later rescheduled for Thursday, Oct. 30.

Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell reportedly wrote a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who helped get military base schools an exception.

“All athletic practices, scheduled games, and afterschool activities have resumed across DoDEA Pacific, Europe and Americas schools,” the Department of Defense Education Activity wrote in a statement sent to News 2. “DoDEA received directions from the Secretary of War to consider all student extracurricular activities, including athletics and afterschool clubs, to be considered excepted activities during the current lapse in appropriations.”

Amidst all of this, Fort Campbell High School has stayed open for normal classroom instruction.
