BROUSSARD, La. (KLFY) — A fire destroyed Clayton’s 70-year-old city hall on Monday night, leaving the town without a functioning city government and all its records lost.

The fire, which officials say was caused by faulty wiring in the ceiling, has forced the shutdown of Clayton’s city government. In response to the disaster, the nearby city of Broussard has stepped in to help by donating office furniture to aid in the rebuilding efforts.

“We’re very happy to be able to help the town of Clayton after the fire they had with their city hall, with surplus furniture that Broussard has,” said Broussard Mayor Ray Bourque. “Cities helping cities is a great way for us to reach out and make sure we are helping other communities.”

Clayton officials are currently working towards rebuilding their city hall, although the exact timeline for this process remains uncertain. The loss of all city records presents a significant challenge for the town as it navigates the aftermath of the fire.

Bourque emphasized the importance of community solidarity, stating that Louisiana needs to stand strong from community to community.

Clayton city officials hope to begin rebuilding in the next few months, with the support from Broussard marking a positive step towards recovery.
