One deputy killed; another injured in shooting at the Iberville Parish courthouse

BATON ROUGE, La. (LouisianaFirst) – An Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Deputy has died after a shooting Monday night at the parish courthouse.

A second deputy was also injured in the shooting. That deputy’s condition is unknown.

The suspect involved in the shooting was killed.

“Please pray for the deputy we lost and their family, and continue praying for Sheriff Stassi’s son. Every loss of an officer hits hard. Pray hard,” said Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry also issued a statement asking for prayers.

“Absolutely horrific news out of Iberville Parish tonight. Please join Sharon and me in praying for the deputy killed, for Deputy Stassi, who is in stable condition, their families, and the entire Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office. The violence must end.”

Earlier on Monday evening, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said one of the deputies shot is the son of Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi.

Iberville Parish President Chris Daigle spoke with Louisiana First News out on the scene tonight.

The Iberville Parish Government posted this statement on its Facebook page.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the sheriff’s deputies involved in the tragic shooting at the Iberville Parish Courthouse. We stand with their families and the entire law enforcement community during this difficult time.”

It’s unclear what led to the shooting and the suspect who was involved.

Louisiana State Police is investigating the shooting. They released a statement on Monday and said further information will be released when it becomes available.

The Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office posted this message of condolences on its Facebook page Monday evening.

On behalf of the entire Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Leland Falcon extends our deepest condolences and offer prayers to the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office and to the family of the deputy who was tragically killed in the line of duty tonight during an incident in Plaquemine. We offer our prayers for the recovery of a second deputy who was critically wounded during the incident. We ask all residents of Assumption Parish to keep our injured fellow officers in your prayers as well. May they find peace at this difficult time.
