Officials said the crash took place on State Highway 181, north of State Highway 140 between Manilla and Osceola. The Friday afternoon crash occurred due to zero-visibility conditions on the highway, caused by smoke from a burning field east of the highway, they added.
Authorities explained that traffic on 181 had slowed because of the smoke when 21-year-old Mackenzie Marie Risner of Manila, driving a GMC Terrain, struck the rear of a Kenworth semi-truck stopped on the road. The Terrain rolled into a ditch after the collision, officials said.
After Risner’s crash, officials said a second vehicle, driven by 32-year-old Jan Sebastian Rabie of Brookland, ran into the back of the Kenworth. This led to a chain reaction involving multiple vehicles, officials said.
Officials said Rabie was pronounced dead at the scene, and Risner succumbed to her injuries after being transported to a local hospital. Two others were injured.
The investigation is ongoing, ASP officials said.
