Organizations such as The Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus and Purposed for the People are among those who are calling for an independent review of the case.
The video, released by Lacy’s attorney Matthew Ory, challenges the charges of negligent homicide that were brought against Lacy after the crash that resulted in the death of 78-year-old Herman Hall. Lacy was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Houston in April.
The founder of Purposed for the People, Celina Charles, said her organization is looking for transparency.
“From the video that I witnessed, it was very transparent, and we have to be focused on transparency,” Charles said.
Since then, many organizations have requested public hearings into the actions of Louisiana State Police regarding the case. The Louisiana NAACP has gone further, calling for the resignation of Louisiana State Police Colonel Robert Hodges. Charles says Lacey’s family deserves justice and accountability from troopers involved.
“I feel like the family should be compensated and the officer should be held accountable, this is a bigger issue that we’re dealing with, we’re not just dealing with Kyren Lacy issue, this is a cycle that needs to be broken,” said Charles.
Charles also urged state leaders, including Governor Jeff Landry, to speak out on the case. She says accountability should apply to everyone, including law enforcement.
“We have to be law-abiding citizens, and I believe that they should also be law-abiding citizens, a position does not change the law, you are required to follow the law, whether you’re in position or you are a citizen,” Charles said.
An event is planned for October 25th with Lacy’s family to raise awareness and push for justice, according to Charles.
The call for transparency and accountability continues to grow as advocates and organizations seek answers and justice in the wake of Kyren Lacy’s death and the handling of the investigation by Louisiana State Police.
