Temperatures plummet as scattered thunderstorms fill in

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy first weekend of October, Utah! We’ll start the weekend off strong with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms as you wake up in northern Utah on Saturday.

The heaviest precipitation will be in the morning as a cold front passes over. Behind the cold front we’ll see dramatically cooler temperatures, especially in the north with temperatures falling 20-25 degrees from Friday’s. Daytime highs will top out in the upper 50s to low 60s with overnight lows dropping into the 40s. Southern Utah will run a bit warmer with highs in the low to mid 60s for most and mid 70s for the warmer spots. The Wasatch Back and mountain valleys will be chilly this weekend, only reaching the low 50s and dropping to around freezing overnight.

With the cooler weather in place the northern mountains have a decent shot at seeing a couple inches of snow. Snow levels will be around 9,000 feet which would limit it to mountain tops, but we can’t rule out a couple snow flakes mixing in with rain for higher spots of the Wasatch Back.

On Sunday the heart of the storm system will have moved out, but wrap-around moisture and a northwesterly wind will spell a few more isolated showers and thunderstorms in northern Utah, higher terrain will be favored, but the Wasatch Front could see a few as well. Temperatures will be slow to warm back up, Sunday will only be a couple degrees warmer with northern valleys still in the upper 50s to low 60s. Meanwhile, southern Utah will top out in the mid 60s and mid 70s with sunny skies.

By Monday the wet weather should be behind us, but we will still have to be patient before temperatures return to normal. We’ll kick off the weekend with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid 60s for northern Utah, southern Utah will remain clear with highs in the mid 60s to low 70s and low 80s for St. George.

We’ll keep you posted on the latest developments in our 4Warn Weather forecast both on-air and online, we are Good4Utah!
