'Set us free': Tutu Tuesdays at Plaza Midwood's Common Market encourages people to be themselves
PLAZA MIDWOOD, CHARLOTTE (QC HOMETOWN) — We all have certain rankings for each day of the week.

“It was approximately August of 2022,” remembered Ryan Armstrong.

Likely, Tuesday is not high on your list.

“On a Tuesday of all days, it’s like a second Monday for some people,” said Ryan.

But at the Common Market in Plaza Midwood, they have an uncommon way of embracing Tuesdays.

Live music and… a tutu. “It’s not about looking sexy or cool— the absurdity is to help set us free,” said Ryan.

Tutu Tuesdays started a few years ago when Ryan needed something to wear.

“On a Tuesday, as it happened to be, I wore a tutu to pick up my tutu to-go food,” laughed Ryan.

The tutus have caught on.

“Blake started selling them in Common Market when we first started doing Tutu Tuesday,” said Ryan. “Which I just thought was hoot”

Ryan said he knows they are a little funny— that’s the point.

“When you put yourself at risk to be the most absurd or ridiculous person in the room, I think it can put lots of other people at ease,” said Ryan. “If you’re not afraid of judgment, maybe they don’t have to be as afraid of judgment themselves.”

He said, musicians who were nervous to perform suddenly got over their stage fright.

People who were anxious felt safe.

Those who felt a bit boxed in felt freer.

All thanks to a bit of tulle.

“I think that kind of thing inspires and creates ripples that you never know how far that sort of butterfly effect will actually reach,” said Ryan.

So, maybe Tuesdays do have some good stuff going on.

It can be when you sing the song.

Be yourself.

Wear… the tutu.

“And sometimes it just fits with the outfit, you just have to throw a tutu on it.”
