According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to the Budget 8 Inn — which is located at 6850 E. 21st St. — around 7:13 p.m. to investigate a shooting.
When police arrived at the scene, they located a man with multiple apparent gunshot wounds lying on the ground in the motel’s parking lot. IMPD indicated that its officers found the man lying near a truck that was littered with multiple apparent bullet holes.
Police rendered medical aid to the victim until EMS personnel arrived at the scene. Medics then transported the man from the scene to Eskenazi Hospital in stable condition.
IMPD reported that, during their investigation of the shooting, detectives found at least 15 shell casings on the ground. Witnesses also told investigators that two or three people fired shot during the incident.
IMPD indicated that those witnesses could not tell officers which direction the shooters fled in.
Police believe they have identified the motel room the shooters were situated in before the incident unfolded. IMPD is working to obtain a warrant to search the room.
At this point in their investigation of the shooting, police have not detained any suspects or persons of interest.
The Budget 8 Inn has been the subject of much scrutiny in recent years. Previous reporting indicates five homicides occurred at the Budget 8 Inn between the end 2020 and beginning of 2023.
Another report suggests a person was killed in “execution-like” fashion at the Budget 8 Inn in June 2023. At least one other serious shooting has happened at the Budget 8 Inn since the June 2023 incident. That shooting, which occurred in March 2024, left one person hurt and another in critical condition.
In an interview with FOX59/CBS4 in March 2024, the owner of the Budget 8 Inn — Kartik Patel — said he had installed 40 surveillance cameras around the property to try to curb the amount of crime that occurs at the motel.
During a media briefing Monday night, IMPD Captain John Arvin said officers at the agency’s real-time crime center have access to the Budget 8 Inn’s cameras because they are connected to police’s B-Link system.
“The owner of this business is very cooperative with police,” Arvin said. “And they have multiple cameras in the area that are all linked to our B-Link system. So, our people at the real-time crime center can tap into those and see if anybody left on foot, left in a vehicle and things like that. So, there’s a lot of good leads for the detectives on this.”
As of this article’s publication, no additional information on Monday night’s shooting at the Budget 8 Inn had been made available.
