Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders weighs in on firing of coach Sam Pittman

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Following a brutal 56-13 loss in their first-ever meeting with Notre Dame on Saturday, Razorbacks head football coach Sam Pittman was dismissed by athletic director Hunter Yurachek on Sunday.

Many weighed in on the team’s coaching change on social media including Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

“Sam Pittman helped turn around the Arkansas football program from one of its all time lows and brought energy and excitement back to the Hogs that was desperately needed,” the governor said in a statement. “I’ve always appreciated how much Sam loved Arkansas and wasn’t looking to use it as a stepping stone but a place to call home. Sam is a man of high integrity and character. Bryan and I have loved getting to know him and Jamie and we are proud to call them friends.”

At the time of his firing, the Hogs announced that offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino would take over as interim head coach for the rest of the season.

“Bobby Petrino has demonstrated a track record of winning at Arkansas and we hope he can bring the team together and lead them to finish the season strong,” the governor said. “We will be cheering Bobby and the Razorbacks on! Forever and always – Woo Pig!”

Pittman was 32-34 during his time as the head Hog and 14-29 in SEC play. In 2021 he led the team to the Outback Bowl, its first bowl appearance in five years, and would win three bowl games during his tenure.

Next week the Hogs head to Tennessee to take on the No. 15 ranked Volunteers and hope to turn their fortunes around after starting the season 2-3 following Saturday’s loss.
