WASHINGTON COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Maryland State Police (MSP) released the name of a driver who was killed Thursday after her car was involved in a crash with two tractor-trailers.
Troopers said Kathleen Hitch, 36, of Falling Waters, W.Va., died in the northbound lanes of Interstate 81, south of U.S. Route 11 (Virginia Avenue/Exit 1).
MSP said medics took the drivers of the tractor-trailers to Meritus Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.
Troopers said the crash occurred around 8:40 a.m. Thursday. An initial investigation determined that the driver of a FedEx tractor-trailer rear-ended Hitch’s Honda Civic as she was slowing down for traffic, causing her to strike the second tractor-trailer.
Because one of the trucks contained flammable materials, crews from the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Washington County Fire Department HAZMAT Team were on scene.
Maryland State Police said lanes on the northbound side were closed for more than 12 hours before being reopened.
