BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Sept. 24, 2025 — Lilliana Young, an LGBTQ activist and secretary of the Bloomington/Monroe County Human Rights Commission, announced her candidacy for Indiana House District 61 this week, setting up a Democratic primary challenge against longtime incumbent Rep. Matt Pierce.
Young, who identifies politically between Progressive and Socialist, said her campaign will focus on housing affordability, raising Indiana’s minimum wage, legalizing marijuana to fund public healthcare and education, and advancing transgender rights.
“My belief is that the state government’s leadership is openly and blatantly corrupt and must be held accountable,” Young said in her announcement. “I do not shy away from being a loud and proud advocate for the advancement of transgender rights.”
Her first campaign event will be a town hall on the state of transgender rights in Indiana, scheduled for Oct. 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Monroe County Public Library auditorium in downtown Bloomington. The event will feature community discussion on making Indiana safer and more welcoming for transgender Hoosiers. Food and drink will be provided, according to the campaign flyer.
Young, who has long been active in local advocacy, said her run aims to “use the state’s muscle” to address systemic inequities across Indiana.
