Fresno’s Valley Animal Center says donations in June were down 21% compared to the same time last year. By July, donations dropped 65%, and they say August closed with a 50% decrease. To make matters worse, they say the cost of medical care, food, staffing, and shelter operations continues to rise.
To manage costs, the shelter will pause animal intake and walk-in surrenders starting Oct. 1. All surrender requests must be submitted to dogs@valleyanimal.org or cats@valleyanimal.org, and if accepted, a surrender fee of $1,000 or more will be required to help cover the cost of long-term care.
They will also be changing their adoption center hours. They plan to be open Wednesday through Friday by appointment only and Saturday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“These steps are being taken to help us run the shelter at a manageable capacity and ensure we can continue providing quality care to the animals already in our facility,” said animal care staff.
To support the transition, Valley Animal Center is inviting the community to a Canine Pop-Up Adoption Event on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Local pet vendors, treats, accessories, food trucks, and guided tours of the dog park will be available until 2 p.m.
