According to prosecutors, Morris falsified records to hide a crash that occurred while he was driving an agency-issued car. He interfered with the crash investigation and altered the agency’s written policy on accidents to cover it up.

Morris was taken into custody and his bond was denied. He will be sentenced on Oct. 1.

The Orleans Parish Communication District released a statement on the conviction:

“The jury has spoken. This chapter of OPCD’s history is now closed, and we will continue to focus on our daily service to the residents, visitors and our public safety partners in the great city of New Orleans.”

The Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams released a statement on the verdict as well:

“Today, a jury of New Orleanians found former OPCD Director Tyrell Morris guilty as charged on multiple counts, including Malfeasance in Office, Insurance Fraud, Injuring Public Records and False Personation of a Peace Officer. This verdict reflects a careful review of the evidence and a resounding rejection of an egregious abuse of power and betrayal of public trust. I want to thank the jury for their diligence, and I especially commend Deputy Chief of Trials Corey Tassin and ADA Corbin Bates, whose hard work and skill in presenting this case ensured accountability on behalf of the people of New Orleans.”
