
All of the injured inmates are in stable condition and three of them were released from the hospital, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said.
The jail employees were injured breaking up the fight, officials said. The fight was ultimately stopped and order was restored in the jail.
“As the fight broke out between the incarcerated persons, the facility was immediately placed on lockdown and additional sheriff’s office personnel responded,” SMCSO said. “Trained personnel from the sheriff’s office utilized less-lethal options to swiftly and safely get the situation under control.”
“The situation is under control and the facility is secure,” the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office told KRON4.
Sheriff Christina Corpus said that the jail employees’ actions help prevent more injuries.
“I’m grateful to the sheriff’s office personnel who acted swiftly to stop the fight and ensure the safety of the correctional facility and everyone inside of the facility,” Corpus said in a statement Friday. “Their actions undoubtedly prevented more serious injuries and ensured the situation was quickly under control.”
The fight is under investigation. The involved inmates could face criminal charges for the brawl.
