BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A homeless man is behind bars after the Baton Rouge Police Department says he threw large rocks at vehicles, causing significant damage and creating a roadway hazard.

Deontez Mayfield, 25, was arrested on Sept. 23 and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. He faces multiple charges, including criminal mischief, resisting an officer, criminal damage to property, aggravated obstruction of a highway, and misrepresentation during booking.

Police said they responded around 1:40 a.m. to the 5500 block of Choctaw Drive, where they say Mayfield was seen walking in the area. As an officer approached, a vehicle swerved to avoid hitting rocks in the road, nearly causing a crash.

According to arrest documents, Mayfield initially refused to comply with the officer until a Taser was deployed. He was later detained after throwing a large rock into a field. Officers also found several rocks in the roadway, some as large as softballs.

Two drivers told police their vehicles were struck by rocks thrown by Mayfield, leaving what investigators described as “substantial damage.”

Police said Mayfield also refused to provide his name during the arrest.
