Gun found at Tennessee high school stolen from Louisiana deputy in 2016

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG) — A gun found with a Whitehaven High School student was stolen from a now-former Jeff Davis Parish Deputy Sheriff who was driving through Memphis in 2016.

In 2016, at the downtown Holiday Inn Express parking lot, Memphis police responded to a car theft. The victim was listed as Ivy Woods, then the sheriff of Jeff Davis Parish.

Officers say they responded to the scene on July 1, 2016, when Woods said his Chevy Suburban was broken into. Woods said he and then-Chief Deputy Christopher Ivey were returning home when they stopped in Memphis back in 2016.

The weapon was a 40-caliber Glock belonging to Ivey. The suspect also took assorted clothes and jewelry from both Woods and Ivey.

On Friday, that weapon was found on a 15-year-old Whitehaven High School student.

“We were coming back from the National Sheriff’s Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota,” said Woods. “Woke up the next morning, the driver’s side back window was broken out of the Suburban and all the luggage was taken out, and even a service pistol from the Sheriff’s office.”

Memphis Police said the teen was spotted on surveillance camera getting into the backseat of a white Infiniti.

Police said the car smelled like marijuana, and a backpack seen between the teen’s legs prompted the officer to make an arrest. When searching through the teen’s backpack, two Glock pistols were found, one belonging to Ivey.

“In today’s society, you know, there’s — a gun can go a lot of ways, and most of the time it’s with kids or juveniles dealing with it, and somebody is going to get hurt,” Woods said. “I’m just happy nobody was hurt that we know of.”
