New video shows moments before reported robbery on Charlotte light rail in 2024

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Newly released surveillance video from CATS is shedding more light on a reported robbery and assault that happened at a light rail station in 2024.

The video, released to Queen City News, shows what led up to the incident at Parkwood Station, just north of Uptown, where Michael Zytkow said he witnessed a violent attack.

The incident happened on July 15, 2024. According to a police report provided by Zytkow, the suspect took the victim’s phone, and when the victim tried to get it back, the suspect assaulted him. Zytkow said he stepped in to help.

“The perpetrator started attacking the victim and started violently swinging at them,” Zytkow said. “And at that point, that’s when I punched the perpetrator, then fought him and held him and pinned him to the ground until police arrived.”

Police arrested the suspect, who has a lengthy criminal history, and charged him with common law robbery. But nearly a year later, Zytkow said the case has gone nowhere and those charges still don’t appear in eCourts.
