According to park owner Scott Brown, the park was alerted around 8 a.m. that the monkey had gotten out. The animal does not have a name, with over 1,700 animals at the park, Brown said it’s tough to name them all.
The escapee is a capuchin monkey, a small primate known for its tool use and distinct dark ”cap” of hair. They’re native to Central and South America.
Zootastic staff and Iredell County Animal Services are actively working to locate the monkey. Brown said they hope she’ll return on her own by Wednesday evening, but they’re prepared to use a tranquilizer blow gun if needed to safely bring her back.
Animal Services has issued a public notice to residents in the area: Do not try to chase, capture, or approach the monkey. If you see her, call Iredell County Animal Services at 704-878-5335.
