Search underway for escaped monkey from Zootastic in Troutman

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Keep your eyes peeled, Troutman, there’s a monkey on the loose. A 5-year-old female capuchin monkey escaped from Zootastic Park on Wednesday morning, and a search is now underway in the surrounding area.

According to park owner Scott Brown, the park was alerted around 8 a.m. that the monkey had gotten out. The animal does not have a name, with over 1,700 animals at the park, Brown said it’s tough to name them all.

The escapee is a capuchin monkey, a small primate known for its tool use and distinct dark ”cap” of hair. They’re native to Central and South America.

Zootastic staff and Iredell County Animal Services are actively working to locate the monkey. Brown said they hope she’ll return on her own by Wednesday evening, but they’re prepared to use a tranquilizer blow gun if needed to safely bring her back.
