Woman hit, killed by SUV in Salem early morning crash

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A woman was hit and killed by an SUV while crossing the street early Sunday morning, Salem police said.

Just before 2:30 a.m., officers responded to the 4400 block of Commercial Street SE on reports of a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.

Early investigation found a Mercedes SUV was driving in the southbound lanes of Commercial Street when the vehicle hit the pedestrian who was crossing the road near Hilfiker Lane SE.

Despite lifesaving efforts by witnesses and first responders, the pedestrian – identified as 32-year-old Brittany Hochstetler – was pronounced dead.

Authorities said the driver of the Mercedes stayed at the scene and cooperated with police.

Roadway traffic was impacted for around two hours for the on-scene investigation, officials said.

Police say the incident marks the 6th fatal traffic death in Salem in 2025.
