Pedestrian fatally hit by train in Southeast Salem

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A pedestrian was hit and killed by a train, prompting street closures in Southeast Salem late Saturday morning.

At around 11 a.m., police responded to the area of McGilchrist Street and Pringle Road SE after Union Pacific employees reported a crash involving a person on the railroad tracks.

Rail crew members told police a man had been walking on the tracks in front of the oncoming train. They claimed they tried various ways to get the man’s attention, but he “did not move for unknown reasons,” authorities said.

The victim, a 66-year-old man, was declared dead at the scene.

Officials said the streets east and westbound across the rail line in the area were closed for the duration of the on-scene investigation, but have since reopened.
