Conservative influencer Charlie Kirk was shot while speaking at an event at a Utah college, Turning Point, the organization he co-founded, confirmed to the Associated Press.
President Donald Trump confirmed Kirk died following the shooting.
“Please keep Charlie Kirk, his family, and all the Turning Point USA members in your prayers,” said Turning Point USA’s Arkansas chapter.
Rep. Steve Womack (R-AR), Sen. John Boozman (R-AR), Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin and Arkansas Secretary of State Cole Jester all gave statements on social media regarding the shooting. They all say they are praying for him and his family.
“America witnessed a cowardly act of evil today. To Charlie and his family – well done, good and faithful servant. America is better because of you,” said Sanders.
“I’m praying for Charlie Kirk and his family, and encourage all Arkansans to as well, for God’s protection and healing,” said Boozman.
“The news of Charlie Kirk’s tragic murder is heartbreaking. Please pray for his family,” Cotton said.
Womack, Griffin and Jester both condemned political violence while offering their prayers to Kirk and his family.
“Political violence has no place in our country—ever. My prayers are with Charlie Kirk and his family,” Womack said.
“The senseless and evil assassination of @charliekirk11 casts a sad and painful shadow over America tonight. Our country shines as a beacon because we were founded on passionate debate and the robust exchange of ideas, a country where concepts and perspectives can be challenged without blood being shed. Today, we have not lived up to that value, and we must all recommit ourselves to the fundamental principle of peaceful debate in a civil society. My prayers are with Charlie’s beautiful family—his wife and his two young children—all those who were close to him and our Nation,” said Griffin.
“Please stop and pray for Charlie Kirk, who spoke truth boldly and now may pay with his life. Best case scenario, this is an attempted assassination,” said Jester. Political violence against public figures, especially on the right, continues only to grow. It is not mental illness, circumstance, or anything else. It is evil. And we must call it that.”
Videos posted to social media show Kirk speaking into a handheld microphone while sitting under a white tent emblazoned with the slogans “The American Comeback” and “Prove Me Wrong.” A single shot rings out and Kirk can be seen reaching for his neck with his right hand as he bled heavily.
Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond condemned the shooting and political violence. “I am devastated for the family of Charlie Kirk after his senseless assassination.. I pray for their comfort and healing in the wake of this unimaginable loss. Politically motivated violence has become a deadly epidemic in this country. There is never justification to extinguish a life over political disagreements,” Drummond said.
Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt says he is praying for Kirk’s family. “Charlie was a great American. The world will be a darker place without him here. I am praying for his wife and children and all those who knew him and looked up to him. At times like this, we must turn to the Lord. Psalm 34:18,” Stitt said.
Stunned spectators can be heard gasping and screaming before people start to run away. The Associated Press was able to confirm the videos were taken at the Sorensen Center courtyard on the Utah Valley University campus, where Kirk was speaking on Wednesday.
