Tooele man charged for fatal auto-pedestrian crash in Springville where victim saved wife
SPRINGVILLE, Utah (ABC4) — The Tooele man accused of driving onto a sidewalk while drunk and killing a pedestrian has been charged with automobile homicide.
Travis Patrick McIntyre, 41, has been charged with automobile homicide, a second-degree felony; negligently operating a vehicle resulting in injury, a Class A misdemeanor; possession or use of a controlled substance, a Class B misdemeanor; driving a motor vehicle while driving privilege denied, suspended, or revoked, a Class C misdemeanor; and unlawful crossing of a median, an infraction.
According to the Springville Police Department, just after 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 3, 2025, a truck pulling a trailer left the roadway near 400 S and 40 E in Springville. Matthew Daines was walking nearby with his wife, planning to get a pizza, when he saw the truck coming toward them. His wife reported hearing “a loud crash” and also seeing the truck coming at them.
Daines reportedly pushed his wife out of the way, saving her, but was struck by the oncoming vehicle. His wife sustained minor injuries on her arm, but Daines took the full force of the vehicle.
Before striking the couple on the sidewalk, the truck had come to a stop in the intersection and was impeding traffic. Documents say the driver started to go forward and drove into the oncoming turn lane, where he sideswiped another vehicle. After this, he drove over the sidewalk and hit the victims as well as a traffic pole.
First responders arrived on scene and attempted life-saving measures. Daines was transported to the hospital but ultimately passed away due to his injuries.
The driver of that truck, McIntyre, was arrested following the crash, and witnesses at the scene described him as “completely drunk.” According to court documents, McIntyre smelled strongly of alcohol and was unable to balance. An intoxilizer test showed that he allegedly had a blood-alcohol content of .307, more than six times the legal limit.
A urine test on McIntyre reportedly gave a positive indicator for THC, and a THC vape was allegedly found in his vehicle’s center console. Police also located eleven empty containers of alcoholic beverages “within reach of the driver’s seat” and three unopened containers of alcohol.
McIntyre was booked into the Utah County Jail, where he is currently being held without bail.
A GoFundMe has been organized for Matthew Daines, and his family shared the following statement:
No words can adequately express our sense of loss at the sudden and unexpected death of our son Matthew Daines. The event that took him from us and this Earth resulted from human error, but does not undermine the power and love of the Almighty, in whose wisdom we choose to trust. In our profoundly deep sorrow, we encourage no sense of retribution to anyone.
We ask that all persons and parties not directly involved in this tragic matter respect our need for privacy while we deal with loss and necessary arrangements, going forward.
