Oakland shooting victim identified, charges filed against accused killer

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Law enforcement is releasing new details after two people were shot, one fatally, in Topeka’s Oakland area on Thursday.

Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay announced in a press release that Joseph L. Kaberline, 37, is the victim of a recent shooting in the Oakland neighborhood in Topeka. He also said that charges are being filed against Dalton W. Thompson, 28, for his alleged role in the deadly shooting.

Kagay said that both parties involved in the shooting were known to each other. Dalton’s charges include:

  • Murder in the first degree; premeditation.
  • Attempted murder in the first degree; premeditation.
  • Aggravated battery.

“Anyone with information related to this criminal incident should report that directly to the Topeka Police Department. The charges are allegations of criminal conduct only. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.”

Past reporting

Police were called around 4:45 p.m. on Sept. 4 to the 1000 block of Northeast Poplar Street regarding reports of a shooting. Officers arriving at the scene found two men suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds.

First responders declared one of the men dead at the scene. An ambulance transported the other victim to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Topeka police arrested Thompson later in the day on Sept. 4. He was taken to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on a $1,000,000 bond with the following charges:

  • Murder in the 1st degree.
  • Attempted murder in the 1st degree.
  • Aggravated battery.
