27 News reached out to Kansas Lottery spokesman Cory Thone about the recent rollout of an app that lets players purchase tickets virtually. Thone said that Digital Lottery sales started in February 2025 and offers Powerball, Mega Millions and about 20 other e-instant games.
“Those are like scratch tickets on your phone,” Thone said about e-instant games.
Thone said there have been multiple digital lottery winners, with winners walking away with a top prize of as much as $200,000. He said that a player from Topeka who bought a ticket through the app won $50,000 in Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing.
To play the lottery through the app, players must verify their identity and pass a test that ensures they’re currently in Kansas. Thone said the app also carries all the benefits of the PlayOn lottery player loyalty program.

Thone said that last week’s sales records in late August showed a more than double increase in tickets that were sold. He linked this to the growth of the jackpot, which recently hit $1.4 billion after 40 draws with no winner.
The Kansas Lottery is also getting ready to roll out a new ‘DoublePlay‘ feature for Powerball players starting on Sept. 22. Players can make use of DoublePlay when playing the Powerball by paying an additional $1 to cash in on the secondary drawing. DoublePlay immediately follows the main Powerball jackpot drawing and has a maximum prize of $10 million. To learn more about DoublePlay, click here.
