The man killed in the fatal Springville crash involving a drunk driver has been identified as Matthew Daines. Daines reportedly pushed his wife out of the way of the vehicle and saved her life.
Matthew Daine’s family released a statement on his death that reads the following:
“No words can adequately express our sense of loss at the sudden and unexpected death of our son Matthew Daines. The event that took him from us and this Earth resulted from human error, but does not undermine the power and love of the Almighty, in whose wisdom we choose to trust. In our profoundly deep sorrow, we encourage no sense of retribution to anyone.
We ask that all persons and parties not directly involved in this tragic matter respect our need for privacy while we deal with loss and necessary arrangements, going forward.”
Craig Miner, Daines’ wrestling club coach and friend, also spoke on the victim’s legacy. He described him as a “determined young man” who worked hard to place first in the state wrestling league.
Miner also said that he was not surprised at Daines’ heroic actions, “It would be the first thing on his mind- to save his wife…He stood up to anything and anybody. He just a had that character. he was one of the nicest and honest kids you’d ever met. He would’ve given his life for anybody.
According to Miner, Daines and his wife had only been married for about a month and a half and both were excited for their life together. Daines’ loss is felt deeply by his family, friends, and his wrestling team.
Miner also said it was, “quite an honor to know him that well. For those who knew him, they just know the caliber he was. Nobody would be surprised at the hero he is.”
He also said the superman cape was accurate and concluded, “They don’t come better than him.”
Suspect arrested, charged
A Tooele man is arrested for allegedly driving nearly six times over the legal alcohol limit and causing a crash that killed Daines in Springville on Wednesday.
Travis Mcintrye, 41, has been booked into jail on 10 counts, including automobile homicide, which is a second-degree felony, driving under the influence, reckless driving and failing to comply duties at the incident, all Class B misdemeanors.
According to a police booking affidavit, Springville Police Officers were dispatched to the area of 400 South Main Street just after 6:30 p.m. When officers arrived on scene, they noticed a Chevrolet Silverado, with a man lying under the front passenger panel of the truck.

Police said the man was walking next to his wife, when he saw the truck driving toward the both of them, and shoved his wife out of the way, taking the entire impact of the truck. Officers administered life-saving measures on scene and was taken to Utah Valley Hospital, but the man tragically passed away.
After the intoxilyzer test, Mcintrye’s initial breath alcohol levels were 6x higher than the legal limit. He also failed to perform the Standardized Field Sobriety Test and Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus Test on site.
During the investigation, police said Mcintrye was blocking traffic at the 400 South Main intersection for both vehicles and pedestrians. He also crashed into another vehicle traveling in an opposite lane of travel. During a records check on the suspect, it was also discovered that his driver’s license was denied.
He is currently being held without bail at the Utah County Jail.
