Trial date set for two men accused in NoDa Brooks’ Sandwich House murder

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The two men accused of killing beloved Brooks’ Sandwich House co-owner Scott Brooks appeared in court Thursday, and now a trial date has been set.

Terry Connor Jr. and Steven Staples, who have both pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, are scheduled to go to trial on October 27, 2025.

During the Thursday court hearing, the judge also set a deadline of October 2 for both defense teams to share any evidence they plan to use in the trial. Neither attorney objected.

Staples’ attorney said she wasn’t aware of any evidence to turn over at this time but would cooperate if anything came up. The State responded by listing out specific types of evidence they’re looking for, sparking some legal back-and-forth in the courtroom.

Prosecutors also revealed that additional charges have been sent to a grand jury for both men, though they haven’t been officially filed yet. The State wants both Staples and Connor to be arraigned on those new charges on September 18. Staples’ attorney said that was fine. Connor’s attorney is expected to file a waiver before that date.

2019 Homicide Case

Scott Brooks was shot and killed on December 9, 2019, as he was opening the family’s iconic NoDa burger shop. The restaurant had been a Charlotte staple since 1973 and was co-owned by Scott and his twin brother, David.

Connor was arrested in March 2020, just months after being released from a prior prison sentence. Staples was arrested later that November.

Both men maintain their innocence, and the case is now moving closer to trial nearly six years after the deadly shooting.
