There is no official launch date set for when San Jose Airport travelers can order a Waymo. The airport said it will be “later this year.”
Waymos will be available to pick up riders at either of the airport’s ground transportation centers (Terminal A or B), according to SJC. From there, they can go “to the destination of their choice within the San Francisco Bay Area service area.”
SJC would be the second airport in the country to have Waymo service available to the public, the airport said. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) was the first when its travelers were able to order the white autonomous vehicles back in December 2022.
In May, Waymo cleared the “final step” of approval to operate in San Jose, according to Mayor Matt Mahan. Full Waymo passenger service is still not available in San Jose; there is no set date for when it will launch to the public.
Mahan said Waymo’s service expansion to SJC is the “perfect time” with major sporting events like the Super Bowl and World Cup coming to the South Bay next year.
“It’s the perfect time for Waymo’s autonomous vehicles to begin to roll into San José, the Capital of Silicon Valley,” Mahan said in a statement. “For decades, our region has shaped the future — and Waymo embodies our region’s spirit of innovation. With San José at the epicenter of the biggest sporting events of 2026, Waymo is an ideal mode of transportation that will help visitors move around the area smoothly and safely.”
SJC is set to be the first and only Bay Area commercial airport to offer Waymo rides to the public, beating out San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport (OAK).
In March, Waymo was granted a temporary 30-day permit to operate at SFO under certain conditions. The autonomous vehicle company looks to fully operate and be open to the public at SFO but has not received the green light at this time.
