SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Salt Lake City Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 182 North I street earlier this afternoon.
The Salt Lake City Fire Department announced that their crews were responding to an active fire in the area of 180 North I street. They asked the public to avoid the area.
A detached garage caught fire, and multiple structures were nearby and threatened. There were also several propane tanks inside the garage, which exploded. Due to the proximity to other structures, SLCFD immediately called for a second alarm.
Reportedly, there was one injury from an individual who was there when the fire started. However, the individual was treated and released on scene.
Captain Chad Jepperson, with the Salt Lake City Fire Department, said the cause of the fire is still under investigation. He also said the crews responded within four minutes of getting the call and were able to contain it within twenty minutes of arriving on-scene.
Crews were able to easily access the structure from multiple angles and knock it down before it reached other buildings. The detached garage and a nearby vehicle experienced severe damage, and neighboring structures experienced minor damage.
Captain Jepperson emphasized the importance of immediately calling 911 when you see a fire. He also said individuals should attempt to put fires out, only if it is safe to do so.
