Habitual felon allegedly steals power tools days before sentencing for 2024 Catawba County larceny

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A man who was charged less than two weeks ago for allegedly stealing more than $10,000 in power tools in Burke County was sentenced on Monday for a larceny in 2024, according to the Catawba County Justice Center.

Johnny Shane Biles, 51, was sentenced to seven to 10 years in prison after his guilty plea to felony breaking and entering and receiving a lost or stolen card, along with being a habitual felon.

The District Attorney’s Office said Biles’ sentence was lengthened for being a habitual felon. He was allegedly convicted of similar crimes in January 2000 and November 2004 in Catawba County, and in February 2007 in Lincoln County.

The incident he was convicted of for his sentencing was on January 17, 2024, at storage units. Victims reportedly told investigators that locks were cut off their units and items were stolen.

Video footage shows Biles’ vehicle parked at the storage unit location on that date, and his ankle monitor for probation revealed he was at the site. Officials said a traffic stop of his vehicle led to the recovery of tools he used to commit the crimes.

In May 2022, an employee of a business in Long View lost a financial card and said it was reportedly used at two locations before being declined at a third. Biles was caught on camera using the card and was seen in the parking lot at the location around the time of the transaction.

More than 18 months after his most recent arrest for these charges, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office said Biles was one of two men charged for allegedly breaking into a construction site and stealing $10,400 worth of tools and equipment from enclosed equipment trailers in Rhodiss.

For that alleged crime, Biels was charged with larceny after breaking and entering, possession of stolen goods and breaking and entering into a motor vehicle.
