National Dog Day spotlight: K-9 Edy’s role in Shreveport PD

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — August 26 is National Dog Day, and what better way to celebrate than by meeting one of the Shreveport Police Department‘s (SPD) four-legged friends in uniform?

K-9 Edy is a three-and-a-half-year-old German Sheppard from the Czech Republic, and he has served on the SPD K-9 Unit for almost two years.

His main job is working as a patrol dog, conducting narcotics searches, and apprehending fleeing criminals.

“He’s real goofy. In his own way, but he’s really good at the job,” shares Edy’s handler, Officer Trevor Pinckley.

Officer Pinckley explains how the unit’s versatility is what makes it so important to the department.

“If it sounds like an officer needs help, I’m going to it. If it’s a wreck, I’m going to it. So I go to anything,” he says.

The pups go through rigorous training before being selected to serve on the K-9 Unit.

Although Edy has a lavish outdoor kennel, he is not treated like a pet by his handler, except for a few special occasions.

“He’s had a couple cheeseburgers for doing what he was supposed to do on the street, but he’s never actually had treats,” Pinckley says.
