Man serving life sentence for 1982 Madison County murder dies in ADOC facility

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — A man serving a life sentence in an ADOC facility for a murder in the 1980s was found unresponsive Tuesday afternoon.

Randy Lee Matkins was found unresponsive at 12:10 p.m. by medical staff at William Donaldson Correctional Facility, News 19’s sister station, CBS 42 reported. He was found unresponsive in the prison infirmary, where he was being treated for a significant natural disease.

He was later pronounced dead.

Matkins was serving a life sentence without parole for the murder of James Willie Askins Jr. on Christmas Day in 1982. Matkins was indicted for Askins’ murder on February 25, 1983, and was sentenced on December 3, 1986, court records show.

Court records show that his life sentence was because he was considered a habitual offender, given that he was charged with second-degree murder for shooting and killing Curtis Kirby with a pistol in 1977.
