Suspect dies weeks after shooting that injured officer

INDIANAPOLIS – A 19-year-old suspect who was injured last month during an incident in which a police officer was shot has died.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, 19-year-old Tyson Reach succumbed to his injuries on Friday at Eskenazi Hospital.

Reach was involved in a shootout with IMPD on July 29 on the city’s near west side. Police were called around 2 p.m. to the intersection of N. White River Pkwy E. Drive and Sheffield Avenue.

Minutes later, EMS crews were called to the intersection of 16th Street and Lafayette Road for shooting.

An IMPD officer was shot at least three times. Reach was also wounded and remained in critical condition for several weeks.

According to IMPD, the incident started when the officer saw a carjacked vehicle near 16th Street and Harding. The officer followed the car into a nearby apartment complex. Four people were inside the vehicle.

After the vehicle parked, one suspect got out and ran off. The officer took the driver into custody, but two other passengers exited the car. Police said one of the passengers—Reach—fired at the officer, who returned fire and struck him.

The officer applied a tourniquet to himself as members of the public provided emergency aid. Additional officers provided medical aid to Reach.

Two other suspects, 19-year-old Mahki Starks (the driver) and 19-year-old Malique Starks (a passenger) were taken into custody on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement. On Aug. 4, IMPD arrested 20-year-old Mandrell Ballard on the same charge.

The injured officer was discharged from the hospital a few days after being shot. He is expected to make a full recovery.
