Indianapolis Metro police crews were called just after 2 p.m. Tuesday to the intersection of N. White River Pkwy E. Drive and Sheffield Avenue for an investigation. Minutes later, EMS crews were called to the intersection of 16th Street and Lafayette Road for a gunshot scene.
Multiple sources confirm that an IMPD officer was shot twice, once in the leg and once in the buttocks. The officer was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
Sources have also confirmed that two suspects were involved in the shooting incident. Both of the suspects were reportedly shot and one of them has since been pronounced dead.
In an update around 3:15 p.m., IMPD officer Drew Brown said the incident occurred when an IMPD officer spotted a carjacked vehicle near 16th Street and Harding. The officer followed the driver, who pulled into a nearby apartment complex.
While details are scarce, Brown said that after the car was parked, the IMPD officer was shot. The officer then exchanged shots with the suspects. A gun was later found at the scene.
“IMPD does not believe there is any outstanding public safety threat to the area,” the department said. “In the meantime, we ask community members and drivers to avoid this area due to an active and ongoing investigation.”
In an update around 3 p.m., IMPD said there is no further threat to the public.
In a statement on social media, Mayor Joe Hogsett said he is grateful that the officer is not seriously injured.
“Every day, the men and women of IMPD put their safety on the line to protect all of ours,” Hogsett said. “Our city is fortunate to have the best police department in the country. Grateful to hear that our officer is in stable condition.”
