The driver, 67-year-old Kevin Bell of Walnut Creek, allegedly crashed into the stopped police car on the 3600 block of Mount Diablo Boulevard around 2:18 p.m. Friday. The crash ignited a small fire in the trunk of the police car, which was extinguished.
“A driver rear-ended the police vehicle causing major damage to the front of his vehicle and the rear of the patrol vehicle,” the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office said. “The impact caused the patrol vehicle to collide with the vehicle in front, causing minor damage.”
Bell and two Lafayette Police Department officers were taken to the hospital following the crash. All three were treated and released from the hospital.
Bell was arrested and booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on felony charges of driving under the influence causing injury and driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08% or higher.
