1 dead after skid loader goes into ditch in Yellow Medicine County

A man is dead after a skid loader went into a ditch in Yellow Medicine County on Wednesday afternoon.

At about 1:40 p.m., the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a person in a skid loader who slid into a drainage ditch and was trapped near the 2900 block of 440th Street in Clarkfield.

Authorities arrived and found the skid loader on its side and fully submerged in the drainage ditch. Rescue teams were able to recover the operator, but the sheriff’s office says the man was pronounced dead on scene.

The man was identified as 51-year-old Dustin Lucius Virkus.
