Spring Creek Road construction delays frustrate Rockford students, parents

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Public School students have returned to school, but ongoing construction on Spring Creek Road is causing traffic disruptions.

The construction project, which involves resurfacing Spring Creek Road, was not completed before the new school year due to a shortened summer break. This has impacted students and parents at Spring Creek Elementary and Guilford High School.

“I don’t like taking Spring Creek. I just go behind and take Spring Brook. It’s a lot faster. But it’s too many cars coming up,” said Guilford High School junior Jonathan Sofolaw.

“It’s been kind of bad because, like John said, I could take a back road, but I have to pick up one of my friends for school, so I have to take, whatever road has a lot of construction on it, and it’s always, like, very backed up in the morning,” added fellow student Tony Versino.

Jim Conley, a resident living across from Guilford, commented, “It’s necessary. I know it’s inconvenient, but I wish they would have spaced that out a little better. And it seems like it’s just happening all over North Alpine. Mulford. I’m glad they’re doing it. But in this concentrated area, it’s kind of tough.”

School officials have reported that the first few days of the school year have gone smoothly despite the construction-related disruptions. Spring Creek Principal Laura Greier provided a statement to Eyewitness News, indicating that the school is managing the situation.

The city of Rockford aims to have the roadwork completed around the Labor Day weekend, which may alleviate some of the current traffic issues faced by students and residents.
