The crash occurred around 10:25 a.m. Friday in the 8500 block of N. SR-39 between Henry Avenue and Blubaugh Avenue. INDOT closed all lanes during the investigation into the crash.
Authorities said the crash involved a head-on collision with a concrete truck, a 2012 GMC Terrain and a 2021 RAM passenger van. Two people were pronounced dead on scene, while three others were taken to the hospital. Two of the surviving victims were seriously injured.
The driver of the GMC Terrain, 64-year-old Jose Chavez, was pronounced dead on scene. The front passenger in the GMC, 59-year-old Norma Perez, was also pronounced dead on scene. Both deceased victims are from Frankfort, police said.
The crash site is located in Mechanicsburg near the MELS at the Starlite Drive-In Theatre. INDOT announced the roadway was open once again to traffic shortly after 2 p.m.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office is now investigating the crash along with other local agencies. The office’s Fatal Alcohol Crash Team was reportedly called to the scene to assist.
