Piles of smashed glass and debris line the floors of Open Door Non-Denominational Holiness Church.
Pastor Richard Wade says nothing like this has ever happened before.
“I got a call at home that someone had run into our building,” he said. “It’s hard. It’s really hard.”
He says the car slammed into the side of their building at the corner of Inyo and F Street.
They’ve served the community for 40 years, but before that, the building was a laundromat.
“Used to be where they washed clothes, now we wash souls,” he laughed.
The congregation transformed the space by selling sweets to neighbors and the walls still hold those memories of hard work and dedication.
“We cherished it, we loved it,” Wade said. “We went and sold candy. We did things to help pay for this property and have something so the people have a place to come and attend.”
Pastor Wade’s wife, Sylvia, is thankful they weren’t inside when the crash happened.
“From what we saw when we got here, the car being inside the building, I don’t think we would have survived,” she said.
The heartbeat of worship often lies in music, so Pastor Wade’s heart is especially broken by their instruments’ conditions.
He said, “My organ. My drums. I’m the musician. And so it’s just a mess. So we believe in God that we’re going to get some help to get it back together as soon as we can.”
They’re raising funds to cover emergency structural repairs, wall and window restoration, interior damage replacement and safety inspections.
