According to the city, the expansion comes in response to increased demand for rail-to-truck transloading services. Opened in 2020, the hub has become a vital part of the region’s logistics infrastructure.
“Today’s expansion of the Rochelle Intermodal Transload Center is a testament to our city’s commitment to economic growth and regional connectivity,” said Rochelle Mayor John Bearrows. “We are proud to be a hub where industries of all sizes can thrive.”
The Rochelle Intermodal Transload Center was initially developed as a joint effort between the City of Rochelle and the Greater Rochelle Economic Development Corporation. It sits at the intersection of I-88 and I-39 and railroads operated by BNSF and Union Pacific.
Since its opening, the facility has transloaded one thousand railcars and served as a staging area for hundreds of shipping containers.
“This expansion will not only help unlock economic potential in Rochelle, but it becomes an important asset for the movement of freight in Illinois, the transportation hub of North America,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Gia Biagi.
Rochelle is located within 1 day’s truck drive to markets that serve over 80 million Americans, according to a press release.
