New Fresno school honors Punjabi activist, embraces core values

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – It’s a milestone day for Central Unified, the first day of school and the debut of Jaswant Singh Khalra Elementary (JSK), home of the Royals.

The brand new campus welcomed about 600 students this morning.

“I’m really excited today, the wait is over, it’s August 13th, the first day of school, and all of our teachers are excited,” said Raul Diaz, the principal of JSK. “You got to see the classrooms, there’s a lot of things, great things going on in there. We know how important it is to get the kids excited about school.”

The school is the first school in the nation to be named after a Punjabi human rights activist.

“A lot of students, before coming to school here, they did not know who he was,” said Jessica Gonzalez, the family outreach liaison. “We have a park down the street, and they’re like, ‘Oh, that’s the same as the park.’ But we want them to know that name carries a big meaning, and their name can also carry a big meaning.”

The school hopes to further his legacy by embracing core values called the three R’s: respectful, responsible, and resilient.

“I like resilient because that means like you don’t give up and you keep trying,” said Toni Sandoval, a 6th-grade student. “So just like, don’t give up and keep trying when you’re doing your work.”

It’s also the first day for new Superintendent Dr. Mark Marshall, who brings 13 years of leadership experience, previously serving as the superintendent of the Los Banos Unified School District.

“The first goal is that I want to listen and learn about Central, I’m new here, so I need to get to learn the lay of the land,” said Marshall. “There are a lot of good things happening in this district, and I want to build upon that.”

As students waited for the bell to ring, emotions were high.

“I’m a little bit nervous, very excited, and happy, and yeah, that’s probably all my emotions right now, ” said Anthony Sandoval Jr., who is starting 5th grade.

As the first day of the new school year kicks off, staff say they are ready to make sure kids and families have everything they need to succeed.
